  • A portable water drill for the remotest areas: Floris de Vos at TEDxBinnenhof

Floris de Vos (Leiden) is the director of the Foundation Holland Water Goes Africa, established in 2008. He is also the inventor of this simple water drilling unit. After working as a tour guide on Borneo Malaysia, Floris started working in the offshore oil and gas industry. During a nine months stay in a hospital one of his doctors challenged him to find a cheap and durable solution for a water well for a project in Gambia and Kenya. Floris set up a foundation and came up with the idea of the FLOFLO. This method for drilling wells is very old but little used today. The foundation established two African companies which currently implement this simple but effective method of drilling with great success. @ TEDx Binnenhof 2012

Rotary drilling is characterized as a method of drilling that employs a sharp, rotational drill bit to bite its way through the earth’s crust. One of the most effective and common methods of drilling, it is used in the construction, mining, and oil industries for its ability to cut through even the most challenging and hardest formations. The rotary drill rig consists of a prime mover, hoisting equipment, rotating equipment and circulation equipment, all of which perform tasks crucial to drilling a well or hole. With the help of pneumatics, hydraulics or an electric motor, high torque and rotation are transmitted from the prime mover to the drill, which sits on a mast above the hole. Rotary drilling was first used for drilling oil wells in 1901 when Captain Anthony Lucas and Patillo Higgins applied it to their Spindletop well in Texas. By 1925, the rotary drilling method was improved with the use of a diesel engine. The first attempt at rotary drilling involved a device that sent a stream of water down a hollow shaft of the drill to remove cuttings. This was in contrast to the cable drill, whereby the operation is interrupted and cuttings are removed singularly before the drilling can resume. The early rotary drill was originally used for drilling in softer formations in areas such as California and the Gulf Coast; but this changed with the production of roller and cone bits comprising steel alloy. This addition made rotary drilling suitable for harder formations, such as rock, and it was eventually used for boring deep holes and wells. Rotary drilling became valuable to the oil industry because it was able to produce holes of a smaller diameter than cable drilling. This became possible because a hole produced by a rotary drill was the same diameter at the lower end as it was at the top. Rotary drilling provided many improvements to drilling applications. The nature of the rotary drill proved important when oil well cements were being produced. The process of unloading continuous sacks of cement to construct a well required the drilling techniques of the rotary drill, which could accommodate these new materials. Early oil drilling applications that were completed with cable tools or churn drills were laden with problems, such as erupting oil fountains that resulted in fires and the loss of valuable oil. The issues that arose from the high pressure of oil wells were remedied with the use of rotary drilling.

Offshore drilling is a mechanical process where a wellbore is drilled below the seabed. It is typically carried out in order to explore for and subsequently extract petroleum which lies in rock formations beneath the seabed. Most commonly, the term is used to describe drilling activities on the continental shelf, though the term can also be applied to drilling in lakes, inshore waters and inland seas. Offshore drilling presents environmental challenges, both from the produced hydrocarbons and the materials used during the drilling operation. Controversies include the ongoing US offshore drilling debate. There are many different types of facilities from which offshore drilling operations take place. These include bottom founded drilling rigs (jackup barges and swamp barges), combined drilling and production facilities either bottom founded or floating platforms, and deepwater mobile offshore drilling units (MODU) including semi-submersibles and drillships. These are capable of operating in water depths up to 3,000 metres (9,800 ft). In shallower waters the mobile units are anchored to the seabed, however in deeper water (more than 1,500 metres (4,900 ft) the semisubmersibles or drillships are maintained at the required drilling location using dynamic positioning. An oil platform, offshore platform, or (colloquially) oil rig is a large structure with facilities to drill wells, to extract and process oil and natural gas, or to temporarily store product until it can be brought to shore for refining and marketing. In many cases, the platform contains facilities to house the workforce as well. Depending on the circumstances, the platform may be fixed to the ocean floor, may consist of an artificial island, or may float. Remote subsea wells may also be connected to a platform by flow lines and by umbilical connections. These sub-sea solutions may consist of one or more subsea wells, or of one or more manifold centres for multiple wells. Around 1891, the first submerged oil wells were drilled from platforms built on piles in the fresh waters of the Grand Lake St. Marys (a.k.a. Mercer County Reservoir) in Ohio. The wide but shallow reservoir was built from 1837 to 1845 to provide water to the Miami and Erie Canal. Around 1896, the first submerged oil wells in salt water were drilled in the portion of the Summerland field extending under the Santa Barbara Channel in California. The wells were drilled from piers extending from land out into the channel. Other notable early submerged drilling activities occurred on the Canadian side of Lake Erie in the 1900s and Caddo Lake in Louisiana in the 1910s. Shortly thereafter, wells were drilled in tidal zones along the Gulf Coast of Texas and Louisiana. The Goose Creek field near Baytown, Texas is one such example. In the 1920s, drilling was done from concrete platforms in Lake Maracaibo, Venezuela. The oldest subsea well recorded in Infield's offshore database is the Bibi Eibat well which came on stream in 1923 in Azerbaijan. Landfill was used to raise shallow portions of the Caspian Sea. In the early 1930s, the Texas Company developed the first mobile steel barges for drilling in the brackish coastal areas of the gulf. In 1937, Pure Oil Company (now part of Chevron Corporation) and its partner Superior Oil Company (now part of ExxonMobil Corporation) used a fixed platform to develop a field in 14 feet (4.3 m) of water, one mile (1.6 km) offshore of Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana. In 1946, Magnolia Petroleum Company (now part of ExxonMobil) erected a drilling platform in 18 ft (5.5 m) of water, 18 miles[vague] off the coast of St. Mary Parish, Louisiana. In early 1947, Superior Oil erected a drilling/production platform in 20 ft (6.1 m) of water some 18 miles[vague] off Vermilion Parish, Louisiana. But it was Kerr-McGee Oil Industries (now Anadarko Petroleum Corporation), as operator for partners Phillips Petroleum (ConocoPhillips) and Stanolind Oil & Gas (BP), that completed its historic Ship Shoal Block 32 well in October 1947, months before Superior actually drilled a discovery from their Vermilion platform farther offshore. In any case, that made Kerr-McGee's well the first oil discovery drilled out of sight of land. The British Maunsell Forts constructed during World War II are considered the direct predecessors of modern offshore platforms. Having been pre-constructed in a very short time, they were then floated to their location and placed on the shallow bottom of the Thames and the Mersey estuary . Government earlier this week shortlisted 16 out of 17 firms that submitted Applications for the first licensing round for exploration in six blocks. The bonafide companies had met the criteria spelt out in the Request for Qualification document, which included technical competence, financial capabilities, legal qualifications as well as National Content and Health Safety and Environment track record. However, there is a storm on checks and balances on the character of shortlisted candidates, for review by the public in terms of past truck records, registrationand financial capacities. The 6 blocks are concentrated in viruga national park, raising a dilemma on need to protect nature, while exploit gains of oil. The history of rampant abuse of nature by companies provokes suspicions, which begs government into delicate choice for authentic candidates The six new oil blocks are in protected areas, including the Ngaji block on Lake Edward which borders Virunga National Park, an international Heritage site. The six biddable blocks comprise of the Ngassa in Hoima District, Taitai&Karuka in Buliisa District, Ngaji in Rukungiri&Kanungu Districts, Mvule in Moyo and Yumbe Districts together with Turaco and KanywantabainNtoroko District. The shortlisted companies will soon bid for blocks or a block of their interest after the mandatory acquisition of data in the blocks or a block through the physical Data Room at the Directorate of Petroleum in Entebbe.

It may seem unusual to say this about a sector that is reliant on advanced rigs and technology. Our people have been one of the central pillars of our success over the past 40 years. This is something that we aim to stay true to, and develop, as we continue growing the business and expanding into new operational areas.

To see more footage of offshore drilling, visit: http://www.oceanfootage.com/stockfootage/Drilling March, 30, 2010 WASHINGTON — The Obama administration is proposing to open vast expanses of water along the Atlantic coastline, the eastern Gulf of Mexico and the north coast of Alaska to oil and natural gas drilling, much of it for the first time, officials said Tuesday. The proposal — a compromise that will please oil companies and domestic drilling advocates but anger some residents of affected states and many environmental organizations — would end a longstanding moratorium on oil exploration along the East Coast from the northern tip of Delaware to the central coast of Florida, covering 167 million acres of ocean. The Obama administrations plan adopts some drilling proposals floated by President George W. Bush near the end of his tenure, including opening much of the Atlantic and Arctic Coasts. Those proposals were challenged in court on environmental grounds and set aside by President Obama shortly after he took office. Unlike the Bush plan, however, Mr. Obamas proposal would put Bristol Bay, home to major Alaskan commercial fisheries and populations of endangered whales, off limits to oil rigs. Actual drilling in much of the newly opened areas, if it takes place, would not begin for years. Mr. Obama said several times during his presidential campaign that he supported expanded offshore drilling. He noted in his State of the Union address in January that weaning the country from imported oil would require tough decisions about opening new offshore areas for oil and gas development. ------------------------------- In Zofingen, Switzerland the existing ground water heat pump was supplemented by another 120 m (400 ft) deep double-U-earthsonde. This drilling job could not be done by a large vertical drilling machine, because the access to the apartment was only possible via a field and the front garden was quite narrow. The drilling contractor Bohrfix AG from Härkingen decided to use the TERRA-DRILL TD 150x7 V. The first 28 m (92 ft) of the bore were protected with casing pipes. Then the rock bottom was reached, so the bore can be continued without casings up to the final depth of 120 m (400 ft). The drill rods were taken out, then the earthsonde could be lowered down into the bore hole. The bore hole was closed with a special filler, which protects the earth sonde and which guaranties optimum heat transfer.

In his weekly address, President Obama lays out his strategy to continue to expand responsible and safe domestic oil production, leveraging existing authorities as part of his long-term plan to reduce our reliance on foreign oil. President Obama is directing the Department of the Interior to conduct annual lease sales in Alaska's National Petroleum Reserve -- while respecting sensitive areas, to speed up the evaluation of oil and gas resources in the mid and south Atlantic, and to create new incentives for industry to develop their unused leases both on and offshore. Also, to give companies more time to meet higher safety standard for exploration and drilling, the administration is extending drilling leases in areas of the Gulf of Mexico that were impacted by the temporary moratorium, as well as certain leases off the coast of Alaska. And, he is establishing a new interagency working group to ensure that Arctic development projects meet health, safety and environmental standards. The past few months, rising gas prices have put an added strain on American families. While there are no quick fixes to the problem, these are steps, along with eliminating taxpayer subsidies for oil companies and rooting out fraud and manipulation in the markets, that are worth taking.
